I hate when I have to focus only on work, and have to make do with the art version of sex, like them TV shows where they have sex on the desk. That looks like fun.

>>However, I cling to my romantic Be-in image of BM: a place where supposedly regular folks can play out >>artsy fantasies on a scale they don't feel confident enough to do back home.

Well, yes, except I've heard it's gotten mighty upscale and expensive, and the folks who go...perhaps would be better off if they channelled more of the honesty and intensity of their Burner Life back into their Real Lives...just a thought. Hopefully, there are those who will take something back form Burning Man and have it infuse their spirit all year long, like I got from Camp Mather. Funny, huh, I had to go to a coutry Our Town and NOT do art to get refueled; others prefer an artificial city of art in the desert. I definitely do not begrudge them any outlet at all for art, sex or their Work.

>>in this franchised bottom line driven bureaucratic world, any outbreak of creativity should be >>encouraged.

Amen. First, O...OK, finally to comment on the BM posting. First, Operation Desert Storm is a very cute idea. The contrast of frivolous upper middle class people, mostly white playing at survival in harsh conditions with poor people, mostly black, trying to survive actual harsh condition is hard to get out of your mind once it gets in there. Throw in the republicans' love of blaming the victim and you have a picture of our political deadend.

As for your PJMB, I understand your disappointment with his splitting (the shrinks' version: "Art = Burning Man. Life = work and sex. Never the twain shall meet."). However, I cling to my romantic Be-in image of BM: a place where supposedly regular folks can play out artsy fantasies on a scale they don't feel confident enough to do back home. An artistic Mardi Gras, or Carnaval, or Gay Pride or Castro St. Halloween. People everywhere like fiestas, right? The idea that art should be part of everyday life is great, but one of the definitions of art (or the sacred) is whatever we consider special: periodic festivals make time special. I know people who would never get all arty if they didn't have BM as a cover.

I'm not saying the burners are the Cool Kids and the rest of us are the Nerdy Kids (though cliquishness appears pretty quickly when allowed), just that in this franchised bottom line driven bureaucratic world, any outbreak of creativity should be encouraged.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15281720.post-1126076456828670572005-09-07T00:00:00.000-07:002005-09-07T00:00:00.000-07:00Dear Ossan,It was me who removed them....yes, seem...Dear Ossan,
It was me who removed them....yes, seems there's an entirely unique, really slimy level of spammers who search blogs for keywords and write gushy comments about how wonderful your blog is, and then want you to go to their commercial blogs all about ceiling fans or tourism to Reno or going to golf school on "interest-free credit" [see above]. There's a way to block these that I had to turn on (that annoying interface with the letter-interpretation thing); but before I turned it on I deleted all the spam comments save one, and they leave annoying impressions in the blog-comment sand.

And to Aidan:
Yes, I got hit over the head with THAT one all right. Hey, he said "poly-AMOURous." Of course, he said a lot of other things, but, you know, guys say romantic things sometimes they don't mean. Too bad I was the last one to find THAT out.

And to the poster about Burner Values:
LOL!
